Awareness and Conscious Living

Why is it important to be aware?

Awareness gives us the opportunity to:

  • Consciously choose
  • Respond instead of react
  • Choose better feeling thoughts
  • Being in the now
  • Enjoy life more
  • Increase our sense of Well Being
  • Appreciate the Abundance
  • Think before we speak
  • Have more harmonious interactions with others
  • Understand ourselves and others more
  • Live and work more effectively
  • Change non-beneficial habits

Feel free to share your thoughts on this in a comment below.

What can we be aware of?

  • Our Feelings
  • Our Thoughts
  • Our breathing
  • The words we speak
  • What we don’t want
  • What we do want
  • Whether to say yes or no
  • What we (want to) eat and drink
  • How well our body is functioning automatically
  • Our Abundance consciousness
  • How we spend our money
  • How we perceive:
  • Circumstances
  • People
  • What we hear
  • Whether we respond or react

Do you have any other suggestions of what we can be aware of and how awareness can help us in life?

What can we do to be more aware?

Ask ourselves many times a day: ‘Am I aware?’
(Rhonda Byrne suggested this in her book “The Secret“.)

Stick post it stickers around the house, in the car, at work which remind us.

Set the intention to be more aware.

Include Awareness in the daily [intlink id=”75″ type=”page” target=”_blank”]affirmations[/intlink]:

  • More and more am I aware.
  • I love the thought of being more aware.
  • I remember to be more aware.
  • My awareness is increasing every day.

I would love to read your ideas on what we can do to be more aware.

Feel free to share this and leave a comment.

  1. Yorinda,
Great post – so much to be aware of. We can be aware of the effect that our words and actions, body language and even thoughts, have upon others. We can be aware of the physical, body sensations that we feel when something pleases us or displeases us. We can be aware of the subtle meaning of body symptoms, what the symptoms tell us to pay attention to in our life. We can be aware of the look in other people’s eyes, their body language, what they’re not saying. We can be aware of nature at every moment.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important topic.

  2. It’s interesting to read this post today as I had a moment of awareness with my kids. My husband is traveling abroad at the moment and I’ve 4 children ages between 1 and 11 driving me crazy.Today I stopped for a moment and became aware of the stress about to brim over. I called the older 2 and explained that I needed help with the younger ones and getting dinner ready.

Sometimes our ability to be aware can be hindered by wanting to deny that we aren’t perfect!

    1. Hi Caroline,

staying aware with young children can be a bit of a challenge. When my boys were young I sometimes wondered if I was thinking at all.
Great to hear you found a moment to be aware and delegate.
There is perfection within imperfection. All we can do is our best, and being a mother I am sure that you are doing that everyday.

  3. Hey Yorinda,

    Great post.

I use awareness based on my goals. If my goal is to lose weight, I need to be conscious and be reminded of my goals on a continuous basis. I have things that I do through out the day that puts me in front of my goals where I have no choice but to be “aware” and reminded of them. For example, I .have email reminders automatically sent to be through out the day.

I like the idea of the daily affirmations.

    Nice blog.

  4. Yorinda,

This is great information. I’m currently reading A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle, and learning that awareness is a crucial element to our being whole. This can be a difficult task for many people, as we can be so easily consumed by the ego, which wants to keep us away from what is important – the Present.

Great tips here. I believe that when we all make the effort to be more aware of all that you speak of in your post, we will be led to greater lives and we will affect the world in a positive way. Thanks!

  5. Hi Yorinda,

Fantastic post! I think being fully aware at all times isn’t easy especially if you’re running around and doing one thing after another. I’ve found that by turning off the music while driving and not watching TV really help me to get in touch with myself because of the quietness. My kids often joke it’s too quiet but I’ve gotten so used to the quietness that it’s easier to become aware and hear my inner thoughts.

    Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. Hi Janette,

yes, having more quiet time without the radio and TV is great to be more aware. I remember driving with my boys in silence after the initial chatter has died down.
      Thanks for the comment.

  6. Awareness is so important. Especially in internet marketing. It is so easy to get side tracked. By being aware of what you are doing at all times, you will stay focused on your goals.
Another area where awareness makes a big difference in my opinion, is positive actions of others. We are so quick to take other peoples positive actions for granted. If you are aware of these actions and compliment them with it, you have the ability to brighten someones day. Do it often enough and people will start returning the favor. Now you have created a super positive atmosphere which makes life easier on all.

  7. Excellent post, Anthony Robbins says, “Every decision we make and every action we take is based on our level of awareness at any given moment.” Yorinda, here is a suggestion how we can become more aware by taking some time on a regular basis to think back on what we have done in our daily life and ask these questions: “What was I doing”? and “How did I feel while doing it”?

Thanks for this post that reminds us of the importance of awareness.

  8. I like the way Guy Finley puts it. His teachings are based firmly on Eckhart Tolle’s, so this may be a quote, but he says: Be the Silent Observer, being aware and watching what is happening with your emotions, with no judgment or criticism… just observe.

It took me a while to understand what that means. What helps me, as a Christian, is the verse that says, Be still and know that I am God.

Be still… and know… that’s so powerful to me.

I like the way you have broken it down in measurable bits, because so often we may think we are “aware” when really there is a lot going on that we aren’t aware of at all.

  9. I love the simplicity of this post – how you take the reader line by line to a greater understanding of awareness. Simple but profound, just like awareness. Awareness helps me step out of the “busyness” of the day the live more purposefully toward my goals. Thanks for bringing it up so I can recheck my state of awareness.

Really interesting to point out awareness of so many things. As a Bowen Therapist I am pointing out subtle difference in clients bodies all the time. Even if it is 20 degrees more range of movement within a particular part of their body, or a pain they had last week that is no longer there. Clients so often don’t notice it until pointed out to them. So I am all for awareness of the body and what changes are taking place each day. Perhaps each morning as we wake up and still lying in bed become fully aware of your body and how it is feeling.

  11. Specifically for me it is crucial I be aware. Aware of my thoughts in order to keep them positive and aware of my daily living in order that I rest well and eat well and stay hydrated. In order to be aware, I have created on my computer a text screensaver “Are You Aware?” and I have alarms set on my cell phone with comments “Are You Aware?”. The best ideas are often the most creative. Thank you for raising this issue and helping all your readers to become more aware.

  12. Hi Yorinda,

Thank you for sharing your lists of awareness. Being aware of our thoughts and actions takes a lot of practice. People who are aware of the consciousness and that they have the power to control their environments are the ones who reach success. Your suggestions to stick post its around as reminders is a good one. It has to be done every day and consistently. Setting the intention is very important part to succeeding in being aware and practicing awareness. Also the affirmations you listed are also very helpful.

When I participated in The Ultimate Game of Life, 90 Day Challenge, we reached a point when we learned about our consciousness. One of our lessons stated, “If you look at the definition for awareness, it is defined as “conscious or perceptive; having a high state of alertness.” Another way of describing awareness is the state of being present. One of the ways to get away from awareness is to be un-present or unfocused.

So the point is we have to exercise our mental capabilities and stay focused in order to be aware of our unconscious world. We live at 20% consciousness and 80% unconsciousness which is quite remarkable. Most people go through life letting things happen without paying attention to the opportunity that surrounds them!
