The Tetris Effect and Happiness

Tetris Effect on the brainWatching the video in which Shawn Achor talks about “The Secret to better Work” on You Tube led me to writing my last post.

Since then I got his book “The Happiness Advantage” from the library.

One of the chapters in the book is called

The Tetris Effect – Training Your Brain to Capitalize on Possibility

which is full of humor and interesting scientific research results.

He says in the paragraph on The Power of a Positive Tetris Effect

“When our brains constantly scan for and focus on the positive, we profit from three of the most important tools available to us: happiness, gratitude, and optimism.

In the Video below Shawn Achor gives tips on how to increase you happinessChange your baseline

  1. Yorinda,

I just spent a few hours with one of my favorite friends who is currently undergoing regular bouts of chemotherapy. I gave a special somatic body therapy session of my main type of work, The Rubenfeld Synergy method. What we discovered together is that although it is a time consuming ordeal and leads to a few days of discomfort afterwards, the actual chemo process is not painful. So, the goal is to live each day fully and not to anticipate those days which involve the chemo process. And then, as soon as it is over, to find a way to reward oneself. The goal is to enjoy every moment, live every moment, appreciate whatever is good, and to remain optimistic that those chemicals will kill the cancer cells and not her life. I felt honored to be able to share those intimate emotions and attitudes with my friend from so many years ago.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

  2. Yorinda, I love that you are posting these video clips, especially this one. I have felt for a long time the truth of what he is saying here, but to talk about some actual results like increasing stress by trying to multi-task is quite simple and profound at the same time.

I had never heard of Shawn before I saw your post and I am so glad that you were willing to share this with me. Thank you.

  5. Hello Yorinda,

    Superb video.
I watch a ton of self help videos on Youtube but I have not seen this one or heard of the guy. I do yoga instead of meditation but I look at as meditation. It’s highly addictive.
    Excellent share.

  6. Hi Yorinda,

Excellent video and a very powerful message. I really like the idea about writing down 5 things you are grateful for every day (30 second intervention). I’m definitely going to try this for 30 days. He listed 6 excellent ways to develop our happiness:

    Gratitude
    Journaling
    Simplify vs Multitask
    Utilizing Strength
    Exercising
    Meditation

I love when he said “Our smiles spread just as depression and frowns spread.” That is one thought worth remembering whenever we are moving towards feeling depressed. We can choose to change it. Thanks for sharing this awareness. It’s also nice to know that exercise helps reduce stress because I am on a regular exercise schedule. I’ve noticed a great change in my sense of happiness! Thanks!

  11. Absolutely great stuff, Yorinda.

Love the Shawn Achor video. He really shows how possible it is to re-train your brain to be, not only happy, but more productive and pro-active in claiming our destiny.

I love his “activation energy” concept. So many of us are held back from great things by little inconveniences.

It’s also such an important thing to work within our natural strengths, not to waste so much needless energy trying to improve our natural weaknesses.

I have never knew of him before this introduction. This seems just basic way of my lifestyle. I understand that taking time first in the morning to a quite place is essential. The need to focus on good things and keep them in your daily actions is a must.

The positive thoughts could only produce good results is something that we all need to make part of our life. He has explained what so few of us live. Lots of people will take this information as what it is, information. The key would be to put in practice as he has instructed. 21 days is how long it takes to change on habit into a way of being.

I thank you Yorinda for sharing this information and bringing all of us to a point of clear understanding. This simple information will help massive people and should be shared globally.

Your one of our greatest visionaries and I am honored to know you.

  15. Hello Yorinda

If we develop our attitude of gratitude our happiness will increase. Samuel Johnson said “Gratitude is a fruit of great cultivation.” Shawn Achor taught us some excellent ways to cultivate gratitude. Thanks for sharing the two videos.

  17. Great post, Yorinda! This is a very interesting way of thinking of life. I clicked on the link for the Tetris Effect, and I couldn’t help but think that this would be very valuable to know from my days in my high school job bagging groceries. Maybe Tetris should’ve been part of our training 😉

  18. Hi Yorinda,
Truly it is all a matter of perspective. How we view the circumstances in our life will make all the difference of weather we are happy today. For example we had a house inspection today because we have someone interested in buying our house. Whether the report was good or bad…….we can still be happy! It does not matter what the inspector says, we can trust that all is working out for the better and He is in control. We will be guided to do the right thing!
    Thank you for that reminder!
